What is garam masala made of?

Garam masala is a traditional blend of various spices ground to powder. There is no standard recipe with a fixed ingredient list for making garam masala.

Depending on the locality and the taste preferences, the garam masala spice recipe varies. If you are a regular buyer of store bought packaged garam masala powders, then you would have noticed the vast taste difference between every brand.

One thing you need to be careful while buying packed garam masala is the ingredients. Most store bought masalas have a high amount of salt which is not widely recommended especially for babies below one year.

Hence, it requires us to understand what is garam masala made of, before choosing one.

Here are a few basic spices present in an authentic garam masala recipe – Let’s say the Basic C’s of a Garam Masala!

It is ideal to introduce one spice at a time to check for any allergies. It is better to avoid certain allergic spices like poppy seeds in initial stages.

In our home, we started with finger foods at month 7 and started adding spices like cumin powder, coriander powder, pepper powder from month 8.

Also, since we do not want to include much salt in her diet, we always prefer making it at home with this garam masala powder recipe.
